Acupuncture is powerful medicine which aids in strengthening the immune system, and serves to prevent disease, control pain, and increase both the ability to function and the quality of people's lives. People who receive acupuncture not only heal physically, but experience new and profound states of peace, clarity, and harmony through treatment which has lasting impact. It is a well-developed, "whole health" care system based on "energetic" laws.

Acupuncture is painless treatment using extremely thin needles strategically placed along the meridians of the body. It has served over the centuries to successfully treat billions of Chinese people for a wide variety of symptoms, conditions, injuries and diseases.. Evidence shows acupuncture releases endorphins which make it effective in pain control and stress relief.

Question #1: How Does Acupuncture Work?
As a system of medicine, it uses natural laws and energetic principles of Taoism with the application of ultra-thin needles to specific points on the body. Each point has specific functions in the body in regulating the free flow of vital energy for health and well-being. Acupuncture accesses Chi, which is the source of life itself.

The acupuncturist opens or closes specific "gates" or points grouped along certain pathways of energy flow called "meridians," which go to all parts of the body. Disease, for example, is prevented or treated by stimulating or reducing the flow of vital energy or "Chi" at specific acupuncture points in the body. Vital energy then is strengthened or sedated, monitored, and balanced to achieve the desired result.

Western doctors are discovering medications that can suppress or stimulate electrical impulses within the body, but they cannot regulate it in the way in which acupuncture can.

Question #2: How Does an Acupuncturist Diagnose & Examine?

Trained Oriental Medicine practitioners use a highly developed system of corollaries to diagnose, treat, and test the immediate success of treatment.

On your first visit, most acupuncturists will listen carefully to you in an extensive interview, which provides vital clues to the overall pattern of health or disease. The acupuncturist will feel the subtle variations in the pulses in the wrist to determine a wealth of information about how the body is functioning. Sound of voice, the condition of the tongue, smell, overall appearance of the face, skin, emotions-- these are all important indicators of your condition. Particular patterns are discerned to determine which specific points on the body to use.

Question #3: How Does an Acupuncturist Treat?

Acupuncturists may use their refined skills with one or a number of techniques to administer effective treatment. The principal techniques and their functions are described as follows:
  • ACUPUNCTURE as described above. Only one-time disposable needles are used at Shequin Acupuncture. Most people receive acupunture treatment lying down, although a seated position is sometimes more beneficial.
  • ELECTRICAL STIMULATION through needles opens the energy pathways. This technique is frequently done in areas of pain or muscle tension.
  • ACUPRESSURE (the use of a finger pressure on the acupoints) helps to promote circulation and relax muscle spasms.
  • MOXIBUSTION (the burning of moxa over the acupoints) stimulates and strengthens the Chi.
  • CUPPING (the use of suction cups) helps to relieve colds and respiratory conditions, and relaxes muscle tension.
  • ORIENTAL HERBS are very effective in strengthening and regulating the flow of energy throughout the body.
  • NUTRITION programs restore balance within the body.
  • EXERCISE, such as Qi-Gong, strengthens and circulates vital energy.
Question #4: Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Most people are surprised and relieved to learn that acupuncture needles are very thin, NOT like hypodermic needles which are big and hollow. First-time patients are usually amazed at how comfortable they are during treatment.

Acupuncturists can attain a high level of skill in gently placing these fine needles and often the insertion is barely perceptible. In fact, the needles are usually inserted only several millimeters in depth.

At Shequin Acupuncture, we help you relax and receive the most value from treatment. After the needle is inserted, you may feel nothing, a slight tingling, or pressure. The treatment is more effective when this mild sensation is felt. After treatment, many patients experience a euphoric feeling, profound peace, and relaxation.

Question #5: What Are the Main Objectives of Acupuncture Treatment?

There are three main objectives to acupuncture:
1. Relieve pain and other symptoms. 2. Strengthen the immune system. 3. Balance, harmonize, and integrate functions of the organs with each other, making for a unified, healthy person, rather than a collection of fragmented, disharmonious parts.

Question #6: Is Acupuncture Safe?

Yes. Because acupuncture treatment is drug-free, you avoid the risk of drugs which can cause many side-effects or dependency. During each acupuncture session, your acupuncturist can adjust the treatment according to your symptoms so that you receive constant monitoring of any changes.

Acupuncturists receive extensive training and are licensed by strict state regulatory boards. Many highly-trained acupuncturists work closely with medical doctors in their local community who regularly find that the combination of treatments are very effective and beneficial for the patient. At Shequin Acupuncture, we use only sterile and disposable needles.

Question #7: Are There Any Conditions for Which Acupuncture is not Recommended?

Acupuncture is not recommended for or during acute, emergency medical conditions such as: shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting or feeling faint, pain or pressure in the chest or upper abdomen, sudden weakness or severe pain, or in any perceived or possible life-threatening situation.

Further, acupuncture is not generally recommended for the primary treatment of severe infection, cancer, and heart failure. Acupuncture has, however, been found useful in studies outside the U.S. for easing the effects of chemotherapy and of pain in advanced cancer patients.
